About our Clinic :

We are a large General Practice Clinic in the regional centre of south east SA with a significant focus on education.

The clinic has 11 partners, and 7 assistants including registrars at varied levels of their training. A PGPPP intern position from the RAH and 3 Flinders PRCC students complete the non admin workforce.

The practice is purpose built, recently renovated comprising 16 GP consulting rooms - most with adjacent separate exam rooms, a dental suite, consulting rooms for our mental health workers, students and a sound proof audio room. The treatment area of the practice contains 3 seated treatment areas and 4 treatment/procedure rooms with beds for the use by clinic GPs. The Practice has plans underway to build another 3 consulting rooms and an improved study area during 2009. A Branch clinic was opened in March 2009 to promote chronic disease mangement.

Fully computerised practice uses our 45 user windows network with multiple servers, fast broadband and extensive use of the clinic intranet. Access to our medical records is available from remote sites including nursing homes and GP homes (for those wanting to catch up on paperwork without coming in to the clinic).

4 receptionists provide significant admin support for each GP and their patients and each manage a separate waiting room for their individual group of GPs. A full time typist will prepare from dictaphone tapes those long complicated letters and reports not easily produced by our doctors from within our clinical software, Best Practice. Nursing support includes 3 f/t positions plus nurse consulting for pap smears, antenatal checks, Diabetic and CHD support for the management of clinic patients.

We offer a full range of educational opportunities to our interns, registrars and those studying for their fellowship exams - tutorials, corridor case discussions, video consultation analysis as well as GP CME, which is often organised regionally in the Mount Gambier area. Our two registrar supervisors are very experienced, one has held the SA regional medical educator position for several years and other has an MA in education from the UK.

We offer opportunities to train in obstetrics and, if you have interest in anaesthetics, we can pursue opportunities in the area to further your interest. Our Doctors have access to private patients in the Mt. Gambier Hospital. Paediatric and obstetric participation in the town public roster is encouraged and well remunerated.

Flinders University place medical students in our Practice and provide educational activities for students, Registrars and GPs in the area. We have an ongoing continuing education focus in the Practice and have in-house clinical m

eetings with presentations and discussion. Our student supervisor also works part time for the Flinders Rural clinical school and the University Dept of Rural Health.

GPs are encouraged to pursue their individual interests within the practice. The practice is staffed for extended hours opening opportunities for interested GPs to consult over three sessions in any day.

After Hours Roster :

The on call roster is shared evenly with all non procedural clinic doctors. A duty doctor conducts an evening clinic and takes overnight calls from the community each evening although most patients present directly to Accident and Emergency at the Hospital (staffed by salaried medical officers) out of hours. Clinic doctors are rostered to general practice after hours clinics on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm and on Sunday mornings from 11.00 am to 12 noon.

Opportunities for Professional Development :

The clinic continues a longstanding involvement in the teaching of prospective GPs. We are an RACGP accredited practice and accept registrars from the various training consortia. Most of the Practice partners have had mentor roles with undergraduates from Flinders and Adelaide Universities and the clinic has participated in the John Flynn Scholarship scheme.

Flinders University place medical students in our Practice and provide educational activities for students, Registrars and GPs in the area, through the locally based Rural Clinical School.

The practice has accepted an intern position within the clinic which the Royal Adelaide Hospital fills on a 10 week rotational basis. These intern doctors consult in conjunction with their GP supervisors within the clinic and spend 3 sessions per week at the A&E department of the Mount Gambier Hospital where they work under GP supervision, many of whom are Hawkins Clinic GPs.

We have an ongoing continuing education focus in the Practice and have weekly in-house clinical meetings with presentations and discussion.

The local Division of General Practice provides continued Professional Development to all GPs in the region. For more information please see the CPD Calendar.
